Deep Canvass Lead


Richmond, MI & Macomb County

FT $3,360 gross/month plus transportation and meal allowance

If you answered yes to these questions then you are a great candidate to become a deep canvass lead.



A candid two-way conversations where canvassers ask voters to share voters’ own relevant, emotionally significant experiences and reflect on them in a dialogue.


  • Train and motivate Canvass Fellows to do the following, while building a team atmosphere:

  • Listen without judgement so voters feel comfortable sharing their views honestly.

  • Listen actively and ask follow-up questions.

  • Be willing to share your own stories to help voters feel more comfortable.

  • Connect around shared values based on common experiences.

  • Deep canvass lead and fellows will receive a few days of training at the beginning of this 9-week deep canvass program. The program will involve having relational conversations with voters and requires courage, curiosity, and the desire to really hear about people’s experiences.



  • Manage five-to-ten person deep canvass team;

  • Participate in training to learn deep canvassing model and scripts;

  • Door-to-door canvass with targeted voters in late morning, afternoon, and evening;

  • Have multiple deep canvass conversations per shift;

  • Ensure that conversations are tracked in MiniVAN [voter database];

  • Ensure that timesheets are submitted by team members on biweekly basis;

  • Debrief conversations on a daily basis with canvass team and organizer.

  • Travel to the Michigan United Detroit office as needed.

  • This is a Tuesday - Saturday work week. Hours and workdays may fluctuate based on weather and progress towards goals.


  • Management experience.

  • Organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Excellent listening and communication skills. Empathetic and motivational.

  • Capacity to listen without judgement.

  • Some campaign and/or field organizing experience.

  • Experience using VAN and knowledge of Google Office and Microsoft Office.

  • Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a reliable vehicle.

  • Attendance at a training in Pennsylvania from July 22-24, expenses paid, is required.
