Deep Canvass PT Fellow

Location: Macomb County & St. Clair County
Compensation: $15.00 gross/hour, plus transportation allowance

If you answered yes to these questions then you are a great candidate to become a deep canvass lead.

WHAT IS DEEP CANVASSING?

A candid two-way conversations where canvassers ask voters to share voters’ own relevant, emotionally significant experiences and reflect on them in a dialogue.

FOR DEEP CANVASSING TO BE SUCCESSFUL, FELLOWS NEED TO BE ABLE TO:

  • Listen without judgement so voters feel comfortable sharing their views honestly.

  • Listen actively and ask follow-up questions.

  • Be willing to share your own stories to help voters feel more comfortable.

  • Connect around shared values based on common experiences.

The program will involve having relational conversations with voters, which requires courage, curiosity, and the desire to really hear about people’s experiences and to show compassion. Deep canvass fellows will receive on-the-ground training and peer-coaching at the beginning of this deep canvass program to help master these skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in training to learn deep canvassing model and scripts;

  • Door-to-door canvass with targeted voters in late morning, afternoon, and evening;

  • Have multiple deep canvass conversations per shift;

  • Track conversations in MiniVAN [voter database];

  • Debrief conversations on a daily basis with canvass team and canvass lead.

  • This is a Tuesday - Saturday work day. Hours and workdays may fluctuate based on weather and progress towards goals. It can also be somewhat flexible to accommodate part-time schedule needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent listening and communication skills. Empathetic and motivational.

  • Capacity to listen without judgement.

  • Experience using MiniVAN is a plus, but not required.

  • Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a reliable vehicle.

  • Ability to attend a training in Pennsylvania from July 22-24, expenses paid, is a plus.
