Location: Michigan residents preferred. Will consider out-of-state applicants if willing to relocate and have a political landscape and knowledge of the state of Michigan.

Compensation: $56,000 - $58,000 annualized equivalent, health insurance, health savings account, generous paid time off, two-month paid sabbatical after 4 years of service, phone and internet stipends. See below for a fuller description of the benefits.

The Opportunity and Overview of the Position 

The current political system is built around power structures that aren’t working for the average person, it will be the goal of the Movement Politics department to help change that. 

​

The Director of Movement Politics (DMP) will lead the most innovative and powerful electoral community organizing in the state of Michigan. The DMP will be responsible for the strategic visioning and planning needed to build power and influence on a local, state, and national level. This is required to advance bold ideas and win real reforms for our organizing base. 

 

Specifically, the Director of Movement Politics will… 

• Look to the long term. Make No Small Plans. Own the project of developing a strategic plan for Movement Politics at MU/MPC so that we are building beyond the next election to the next decade.

• Support the development and execution of a strategy to take over local and state. government (and our state’s congressional delegation) with candidates that reflect the real lived experiences of our organizing base. 

• Lead MU/MPC throw-downs with volunteers, key electoral allies, and political coalitions.

• Lead the organization’s engagement in the day-to-day struggles to back up elected officials doing the right thing and challenge those who are not. 

• Discard endless meetings and replace them with strategy and action.

• Manage effectively; from Movement Politics staff to member committees; take input, enable and support, build systems of joint accountability. 

• Develop and lead engagement with candidates. 

• Develop and lead Movement Politics convenings to increase skills and develop plans for running slates of candidates local, state, and federal. 

• Use innovative electoral organizing, united with volunteers, and build it into a unified political force capable of building a true multi-racial democracy. 

• Support our organization’s goal to recruit, train, and advance hundreds of candidates who come directly out of our organizing efforts to run and govern as a collective slate.

• Raise MU/MPCs profile through earned media and social media in conjunction with our communications department. 

• Develop and execute fundraising plans rooted in our values that expand the resources of MU/MPC. 

• Work with the Director of Finance & Operations to oversee MU/MPC c3/c4 compliance and submission of state and federal Independent Expenditure Committee reports.

Qualified candidates will have 

• Proven ability to win elections and build scaled electoral programs. 

• Experience developing and executing political programs including, data, field, canvass, candidate messaging, and communications. 

• Understanding of campaign finance legal structures. 

• Understanding of and ability to manage a scaled volunteer field structure.

• Excellent judgment in internal and external communication. 

• Passion for our issues. 

• Highly organized and deadline-oriented. 

• Experience in community organizing, with experience in grassroots leadership development. 

 

Additional skills that would be beneficial: 

• Ability to speak a language other than English 

• Public speaking experience 

• Instructional experience 

 

Working Conditions: 

• All work will be conducted remotely until a return to office protocol is established

• Office & field environment 

• Normal business hours, some additional hours required with occasional weekend activities. Hours expand during election seasons. 

 

Compensation and Benefits: 

Status: Full-Time, Exempt, benefits-eligible 

Salary: $56,000-58,000

Benefits include: 

• Health Insurance available immediately upon hire, or a Health Insurance Stipend if you opt for your own plan 

• Health Savings Account: Prorated contribution of $600 per calendar year paid in monthly increments, when on the organizational insurance plan. 

• Stipends: Transportation stipend (currently internet stipend) of $75 a month and cell phone stipend of $50 a month. 

• IRA, when earnings threshold has been met 

• Paid Time Off: 15 days for the first and second year of employment which begin accruing when you start. It cannot be taken for the first 90 days. 18 days; third and fourth year, 22 days; fifth year and beyond. 

• Holidays: 11 paid holidays. 

• Sabbatical: Two-month Sabbatical after four years of full-time service. Close date: Until hired
