In 2020, Michigan United created a grassroots Public Health Navigator program in partnership with the Genesee County Health Department. The work of our Navigators is vital as we enter the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in light of the urgent need for large-scale vaccination to overcome the virus. Michigan United and community partners work together on COVID-19, public health education, and vaccine accessibility.

Many of the most vulnerable communities to COVID-19 have the least access to information and resources to protect themselves and their families. Low-income communities, communities of color, and immigrants have many barriers in this regard, from language to literacy to trust in government. These are major contributing factors to the inequitable impacts of the disease. This inequity is exacerbated by other systemic issues that impact our communities.

We work closely with our partners at the Health Department to continuously develop strategies for effectively addressing vaccine hesitancy in our communities. We have ongoing training for Navigators and other staff and coordinate with other stakeholders in the community to compare best practices and address questions or concerns that community members about the vaccine have raised. The work of the Navigator program has the opportunity to change the trajectory of racial health disparities during and after COVID-19.
