Michigan United Condemns SCOTUS Affirmative Action Decision

In response to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on affirmative action, Ken Whittaker, executive director of Michigan United, released the following statement:

“Michigan United strongly condemns the recent Supreme Court decision limiting the consideration of race in college admissions. This decision is a significant setback in the ongoing struggle for equal opportunities and diversity in higher education.

"The Supreme Court's ruling in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. (SFAI) v. President and Fellows of Harvard and SFAI v. University of North Carolina is deeply concerning. It disregards the progress we have made in fostering inclusive educational environments and denies historically marginalized communities the opportunities they deserve.

“Affirmative action has played a pivotal role in addressing historical injustices and creating diverse learning environments where students from all backgrounds can thrive. It is important to maintain and expand programs like affirmative action to challenge stereotypes, broaden perspectives and enhance educational opportunities for all students.

"It is disheartening to witness the Court reject the precedent and intent of past rulings, thereby perpetuating systemic inequalities that disadvantage marginalized communities. We cannot afford to let progress be dismantled in our pursuit of equal access to education and opportunities for all.

“Michigan United urges educational institutions, policymakers, and communities to rally together and redouble their efforts to create inclusive and diverse campus communities. It is crucial to push back against this decision's adverse effects and work towards ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, has an equal chance to succeed and contribute to our society.”
